I provide new answers and new ways of thinking about everyday events

Charles studied history and literature as well as maths and science before choosing a career path.

What’s your job role?

I’m a lecturer in astronomy and physics

What do you do in your job?

I complete research into important questions surrounding gravitational and quantum physics while lecturing students on physics, astronomy and cosmology. What science has observed at the quantum level has raised more questions than it has answered. Because of this I also give public talks on physics research, including my own work, explaining how it helps to solve big questions about the universe.

If you had to summarise the impact your job has on everyday life, what would you say in two sentences?

Quantum physics is the science of the very small. It explains how atoms and particles interact and behave in different situations. I provide new answers and new ways of thinking about everyday events that make scientific sense.  My research has also helped to develop applications based on new techniques and a better understanding of fundamental physics.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Making nice new discoveries in theoretical physics and sharing them with others.

What did you study at school?

Science, maths, literature and history.

What inspired you into your career?

I’ve always had an unstoppable curiosity about how the Universe works, and amazement at the huge progress made by scientists.

What top tips would you have for people wanting a job like yours?

  • Enthusiasm about nature – you must be interested in past and latest developments, but keep an open mind
  • Be smart on problem solving. Work hard and carefully to get good results
