Katherine Mordecai

Harwell Campus

My advice for other young people is to remember that your school options do not define your future.

Katherine is an apprentice so she splits her time between college and practical training.

What do you do in your job?

I work within many different aspects of engineering, from the design office to manual machinining. As an apprentice, I also spend time at college working on the academic side of my engineering qualification.

What inspired you into a career in engineering?

Practical problem solving, such as taking something broken and working out why, is something I have always enjoyed. I was able to express this with my motorcycle interest. Seeking information about a career where I could use those skills and interests led me to STFC.

What is the best thing about your job?

The work is really exciting, and there are many opportunities to take – such as working abroad.

What top tips do you have for people wanting a job like yours?

  • Research the role well
  • Visit the company’s apprenticeship team
  • Your CV should show enthusiasm
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions when applying
